Glengyle |
The Glengyle distillery had closed in the 1920's during the massacre of Campeltown's distilleries. The site has been used by numerous other businesses since then, and there had been plans to restart it several decades ago. Glengyle had been a late comer to the Victorian era, it was established by William Mitchell in 1872 and went into production the following year. Mitchell ran the distillery until just after the First World War, when it was sold to West Highland Malt Distillers Ltd in 1919. Glengyle was only able to last until 1925 though, and like a number of others, the site was bought by our friends the Craig Brothers who set up another garage and petrol station. In 1941 the owners of Glen Scotia, the Bloch Brothers, bought it but were unable to restart it. It was then used by one of the local agricultural companies for the early 1990's and then closed again. Then in the 2000 J & A Mitchell of Springbank fame bought the site and finally restarted production, using still equipment from other distilleries such as Ben Wyvis and Craigellachie. They are now planning a new malt: Kilkerran, production of which commenced in 2004, so one is coming my was as soon as I can get one!
