Glenkinchie

Glenkinchie is owned by United Distillers, who own a lot of Scottish distilleries and this malt is one of the classic 6 that United market. The distillery itself, situated near to Pencaitland - south east of Edinburgh, dates back to the 1830's, with the only break in production being for the world wars when barley and coal were in short supply.

It's one of the few surviving lowland distilleries, and that may be because the single malt is of a very high standard. They used to triple distil the whisky the same as other lowland distilleries, but this seems to have been considered too expensive, so now they only do it twice.

The distillery runs frequent tours to supplements it's income and it proximity to Edinburgh obviously helps this, as it was quite busy when I visited it.

Half empty bottle of Glenkinchie This is usually found as a 10 year old, it is smoky by nature and dry. The malt is typically pale and smooth, but has more body than some lowland malts. The connoisseur's pick this one out as the best of the lowland malts for its more smoky taste, well worth a tipple.
