These
are from the area of Scotland south of an imaginary line from
Greenock to Dundee. They are generally lighter malts than those
found further north due to the milder climate, they are
generally regarded to be of a lesser quality than those of other
regions, but for those of us who prefer the lighter sweeter
brand, these come recommended. The heyday of this region was well back in the early 19th century, when there where as many as 300 distilleries in production. However, they were unable to compete with the more popular Highland and Speyside brands, many only lasted a few years. Today there are only a half dozen or so left, and of those only two really look like long term survivors, largely because of bigger parent companies. |
