Lowland malts

Map ofthe lowlands regionThese are from the area of Scotland south of an imaginary line from Greenock to Dundee. They are generally lighter malts than those found further north due to the milder climate, they are generally regarded to be of a lesser quality than those of other regions, but for those of us who prefer the lighter sweeter brand, these come recommended.

The heyday of this region was well back in the early 19th century, when there where as many as 300 distilleries in production. However, they were unable to compete with the more popular Highland and Speyside brands, many only lasted a few years. Today there are only a half dozen or so left, and of those only two really look like long term survivors, largely because of bigger parent companies.
